After the death of his parents, "Engie" was adopted by a member of the "other" Mason family. This was Charles Mason, also known as Charles Preston Scarborough. He lived in Richmond Hill where he was a hardware merchant. He taught Engie the tinsmithing trade. Engie was musical and played the coronet beautifully. In 1925 he kept a diary of a trip to England to visit Lincolnshire.
