Dorothy Evelyn Lowry

Lived in Monteith, Toronto, Newmarket, Barrie Dorothy was the first group of girls to join the CWAC, Oct. 23, 1941, basic training in Toronto. In Jan. 1942 were billeted with the Morton's in Newmarket. They were also the first group of girls in the army camp. Nov 11, 1942, received the call to go oversees, went first to Ottawa, then by train to Halifax. They then boarded a troup ship, the original Queen Elizabeth, which was too fast for a convoy. They had to go by Iceland to avoid a German U boat. They landed at Greenoch, Scotland December 19, 1942 and at night went by train to London. they stayed at Hotel Surrey in London, 6 th floor, now the University of London. She worked out of the garage and drove for CMHQ in Chelsey London. One of the people she drove for was General Bruce Matthews. She also drove ambulances bringing wounded back from the coast. She was oversees about 3 years, returning on the New Amsterdam to Halifax, demobilizing at Long Branch ON, Oct 26, 1945. During the war she was engaged to Cpl. John Myles of the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment, who died from a snipers bullet April 25, 1945, after hostilities had ceased. He is buried at Holten Holland, section 2, row D, grave 9, He was the Son of Thomas and Elizabeth, Vancouver BC.
